Being Specific. How To Master It, To Be Your Best Self.

Some Friends Are Gathered Around Pool Table, signifying the importance of being specific.

The results of being specific are two sided.

On on the one hand, being specific, especially time specific, when it comes to our goals, is extremely helpful.

Time, is one of our most precious resources. However, one of reasons this resource is so precious is because it is limited. We only get twenty four hours a day. Which is exactly, why being specific about when we want to achieve our goals. Helps us balance two important needs at once.

That is, we get to achieve our goals in the most time efficient manner possible.

Being Specific, Can Go Both Ways.

However, if we put the concept of time to one side. We can see that another benefit of being specific is that it allows us to know exactly when we have reached our mark. This is helpful because as human beings, we have a wide range of different needs. Being specific about our goals, helps us identify when we’ve reached our end goal. Which frees us up to be able to manage achieving the many other goals, that address the different needs, that we have.

Nevertheless, a potential drawback from being specific is that it can cause us to miss out on something that we never knew we wanted. Regardless of our learning styles or preferences, whether we are kinesthetic learners (learn through movement), visual learners, or whether we like to learn from listening.

It’s Okay To Be Open To Better.

One of the greatest teachers in life is experience. However, no matter who we are, or how old we are. The truth is that to some extent, all of our experiences are limited. We may have a firm grasp of the fundamentals of life. Nevertheless, we all have blindspots. Limitations, when it comes to how much and what, we have experienced.

Which means we are all, only aware of what our tastes are, based on what we’ve experienced so far. However, this means that when life puts us so through a new experience. We all need to be open-minded enough, to re-evaluate our preferences (within reason).

Leave Room For Abundance.

In other words, life is characterised by abundance. Our preferences are colored by our experiences, which in turn help shape our goals. Chasing our goals and the things we love, is arguably our duty as human beings and our purpose for being here. However, we also need to be aware of the limitations that come from living based on our limited experiences. We also need to be aware that the future is where new experiences live.

If whilst en route to one amazing goal, we find another (perhaps more amazing) goal cross our paths. Rather than look at this new experience as a problem, we should look at it as confirmation of the richness and abundance of life.

Instead of stoically, pressing on with the original plan and ignoring what the new experience is teaching us. The best thing we can do is slow down and revise, analyze, compare everything.

Life Is Too Short To Ignore Quality.

Again, life is short and we are human beings. Whilst it is natural for us to feel aligned with the original goal. Every goal that we have or ever will have is supposed to add value to us and our lives. We are the ones that are alive. No goal should ever dwarf us in importance.

Arguably, everything that we experience, happens for a reason. So whenever a new opportunity comes along, we are best served by taking the time to consider the merits of the opportunity.

Since we can only do one thing at a time. It is our duty to ensure that whatever we are spending our time on, is the best option possible.

Being aware of how being specific can work for and against us. Empowers us to be in a position where we can always make the most of being specific. Whilst never using it in a way that works against us.

Seen from this vantage point, being specific, will always be your friend.
